Die Oberbärenburger Kapelle

Die evangelische Kapelle Oberbärenburg kann wohl getrost als Wahrzeichen des Ortes bezeichnet werden. Direkt am Walde gelegen und umrahmt vom hübschen Waldfriedhof, zeigt sich das kleine Kirchlein als stille Stätte des Friedens und als begehrtes Fotomotiv.

Lauenstein castle

Lauenstein fort was built towards the end of the 12th century and was owned by the aristocratic von Bünau family. They had a far-reaching influence over cultural and economic development in the Eastern Ore Mountains.

Historic bobsleigh run

The curves set in natural stone are still reminiscent of the beginnings of bobsleigh in the Eastern Ore Mountains.

Aschergraben

Der Aschergraben ist ein Kunstgraben südöstlich der Bergstadt Altenberg. Der aus dem 15. Jahrhundert stammende Graben diente der Zuführung von Aufschlagwasser für die Zinnaufbereitung des lokalen Bergbaus.

Lauenstein church

Constructed in the last thirty years of the 15th century the church building hosts an altar which is the most significant of its kind in Germany and the Bünau chapel with family epitath.

Arno-Lippmann shaft - shaft building with head frame

In order to supply the newly founded German Democratic Republic (1949) with tin, the district of Altenberg had been developed by the central Arno Lippmann shaft. During 1968 and 1991 the structure allowed annual production of 0.5 to 1 Mt of tin ore.

Mouth hole of the Zwitterstock Tiefer Erbstolln adit - Zwitterstock Tiefer Erbstolln and Neufang mines

Reaching a length of almost 2 km the Zwitterstocks-Tiefe-Erbstolln adit belongs to the technical masterstrokes of the Altenberg mining industry. It has been labouriously developed into extremely hard rock, but then served for cost-efficient drainage for a long time.

The Hülfe Gottes Erbstolln adit below the Aschergraben claim has been in use several times since 1749, each time with the aim of extracting ore. At the same time it drained the pit water from levels below the Tiefen-Bünau-Stolln adit.

Meridian stones

Meridian stones were used to rectify magnetic pole related deviations in compass gaugings.

Tin washer IV

The history of tin washing dates back to the 16th century. The tin washer IV represents a significant technological innovation of ore processing with far reaching importance for mining in central Europe and worldwide.

Pithead with mine smithy - Vereinigt Zwitterfeld zu Zinnwald

Shaping the town’s character in a typical way this building had been constructed in 1917 as a complex of mine forge, assembly room and administration facilities. During development of the visitor mine Zinnwald after 1990, the building was repaired in compliance with monument protection.

Powder house - Zwitterstock Tiefer Erbstolln and Neufang mines

The powder house was constructed in 1793. It was used to safely store the gunpowder needed for Altenberg’s mining.

Rothzechner hoisting shaft - Zwitterstock Tiefer Erbstolln and Neufang mines

The mines at the so-called “Neufang”, east of the Altenberg Pinge sink-hole, were discovered as early as 1472. Mining on ore veins predominated.

Aschergraben man made ditch

The Aschergraben ditch is one of the prominent, technical masterstrokes from Altenberg’s early mining days. It supplied waterwheels and treatment plants with water for more than 500 years.

Machine house with hoisting engine

Inside the courtyard of the Arno Lippmann shaft main building the original hoisting engine, fabricated by VEB NOBAS Nordhausen, has been preserved.  Performing 450 KW of power it allowed hoisting material with 4 m/s.
